The New NY Bridge project crossed another milestone the week of May 11, 2015 with the installation of the first precast pier cap. These large concrete fixtures sit atop completed pier columns and eventually will support the new bridge’s road deck.

The precast cap was fabricated by Coastal Precast Systems in Chesapeake, VA and barged to the project site along with seven other caps. Weighing well over 200 tons, the cap was installed by the project’s mammoth I Lift NY super crane.

The precast caps are made with reusable molds, called forms, which can create hundreds of identical units. This process not only reduces cost, it ensures that every precast piece meets the highest quality standards.

A second group of pier caps will arrive at the project site later this summer, part of the grand total of 59 caps that will be installed in the coming months.
